Motivation, The 5 second rule
So, you have a dream for your life…
Every single one of us has an idea of what we want in life yet only some of us seem to be able to really live that life. But what sets those people apart from the rest of us? What do they do differently? The answer is simple – they lean into discomfort and they move before they have a chance to talk themselves out it.
My inspiration for this week’s theme of Motivation is Amy Landino and Mel Robbins who both say that motivation is not something that just dawns on you one day and then you spring into action and your life miraculously goes from dull and uninspired to a beautiful life filled with amazing people and beautiful things. That only happens in the movies.
Motivation comes only once you have made a move.
Amy Landino :
- So, how do you go from inaction to action? How do change? How do you get to that life if it’s not as easy as in the movies?
- The 5 second rule can change your life and works on a remarkably simple, yet little know principle of how your brain works. One of your brain’s functions is to keep you alive. It does so by reading the chemical signals in your body. If you do something that raises your stress hormone, even if doing that thing will have a positive effect on your life, it will try to talk you out of it. It will try to keep you from experiencing anything other than what you have been conditioned to believe is a safe place also known as your ‘comfort zone’.

- Confidence in yourself is built through acts of everyday courage.
Mel Robbins :
- Your hormones are causally linked to your emotions – they cause you to feel happiness or love or excitement, and also fear. Doing something new can cause fear of the unknown, so your body will create fear chemicals. This will make your brain think you are in danger, so it will start to send you reasons why you should not be doing what you are doing.
- You only have 5 seconds to bypass this reaction. You can do this by counting backwards from 5 (as if you are launching a spaceship) and moving physically. Once you are up and moving, go and do that thing, no matter how boring or annoying it might be. Before you know it, you will have finished, and you can move on to the next thing.
- That exhilaration and feeling of accomplishment from doing only one tiny thing, like researching your business idea, or filming that video you wanted to post on YouTube or picking up your paint brush will fuel you to go for the next tiny task, and then the next one. Three months can fly by like this in almost an instant and you will have some results to show.
- So, don't waste any more time! What are you waiting for? Go do what has been written on your soul!
